Brief History of the College

Nongtalang College was Established in the year 1988, by the Nongtalang Village Durbar under the leadership of (Late) Shri. John Deng Pohrmen, Ex-Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya. The foundation Stone of the present College building was laid by (L) Shri. Purno A. Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya on the 9th April 1988.

The main objective of the Nongtalang Village Durbar in establishing the college is to provide education to the poor and needy students of the areas, whose parents could not afford to send their children to the town and Cities for higher studies.

Nongtalang Village Durbar along with Durbar Manniew has donated 1 (One) hectare plot of land at Kermia - Jong - Iaw, at the outskirt of the Village for the College Permanent Residential Campus. The Village Durbar and Durbar Manniew has also agreed to donate more plots of Land in the adjoining areas if required by the College in the future. The Foundation Stone was laid by Shri. S.C. Marak the then Chief Minister of Meghalaya on the 19th December 1996.

The College was registered under Meghalaya Societies Registration Act, XII of 1983 Certificate of Registration vide No. SR/NC-241/89 of 1989.

Permission was granted by Director Public Instruction Meghalaya, Shillong for starting the College Vide No.CE/GA/ESU/6/80 - 81/49 date. 10.10.1993.

It is noted that Nongtalang college is a Co-educational institution, which is situated in the Rural and Border Areas of Khasi and Jaintia Hills with Bangladesh.


Affiliation and Recognition

P.U. (Arts) section first affiliated to N.E.H.U from 1992. Now HSSLC Class - XI & XII (+2 Level) is affiliated to Meghalaya Board of School Education since 1995 after Government took over the +2 stage.

Three Year Degree Course (TDC) started in April 1992. Provisional affiliation for degree (General) Classes from NEHU was granted from 1992 vide No. CDC/A.98/90 - 2837 date. 18th September 1992.

The College has been upgraded to Ad-hoc system by the Government of Meghalaya on February 1999.

The College at present has been again upgraded to Pepople's College Grant-in-Aid Scheme by the Government of Meghalaya on September 2021.

The College also has been granted Provisional affiliation for Honours in Khasi, Political Science, Education, History, Sociology and Economics from 2000 vide No. CDC/A.98/99 - 2000/1186 date. 20.11.2000.

The College also has been granted "Permanent Affiliation" for B.A. (Pass) Course in English, Khasi, History, Education, Political Science, Economics, Philosophy and Sociology with effect from 2nd November 2005.vide No. CDC.A/89/2005/2032 date. 16th Nov. 2005.

The College has been included in the List of Colleges prepared under Section 2(f) & 12 (B) of the UGC Act, 1956 Inclusion of New Colleges Vide No. F.8 - 114/2006 (CPP-I) date. 04th April 2006.
